Earliest Text · the research behind the Creepy Tales videos

The fairy tales you know were rewritten. Here are the originals.

Every Creepy Tales video is sixty seconds. Every story behind one is longer, older, and stranger. Earliest Text is where you read them, straight from the first printed editions, with the page numbers.

Each story here comes from the actual text: the 1740 French novel, the 1812 German first edition, the chronicle written in the year it happened. Every quotation is given in its original language and in English, with a link to the scan. Old stories have forgotten meanings. We go and find them.

How we check

Every claim in a video traces to one original text.

A claim about "the original version" of a tale has to come from the original version, not from a blog post that summarizes it. Each story here quotes the first edition, in its own language and in English, and links the scan so you can read it yourself. Read the method.
